Savannah Dhu Donates 1,000 Pounds of Venison to Catholic Charities

SAVANNAH - The recent harvest of whitetail deer at Savannah Dhu resulted in the donation of nearly 1,000 pounds of venison to area food pantries through Catholic Charities of Wayne County.
Loretta Krueger, the agency’s executive director, recently wrote a letter to Linda Gillette, Savannah’s Dhu’s Community Relations coordinator, saying the donation worked out well.
“I wanted to again thank you for thinking of Catholic Charities when Savannah Dhu was looking for recipients for that great venison donation,” Krueger wrote. “Peter, our community outreach worker, is still distributing the last freezer full and will give me the final distribution list in a few days.”
Krueger indicated three area food pantries each received as much as their freezers would hold.
“One food pantry volunteer, a 90-year-old woman, drove up herself to oversee the loading and unloading - she asked for and received over 100 pounds of meat,” said Krueger. “At least two other organizations serving low income families also received some of the donation for the families they serve.”
Catholic Charities also directly distributed meat to more than 25 needy families to provide healthy, protein-filled meals for them, Krueger said.
Savannah Dhu chefs Luke Houghton and Dan Iannicello assisted with the deer processing and packaging.
