WOLCOTT- For the second year, the Wolcott Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a merchant tree decorating contest.
So far 17 Wolcott merchants have registered, each decorating a Christmas tree to be judged by customers visiting the various stores.
The deadline for decorating trees is Dec. 8 and voting will take place Dec. 9 through Dec. 23.
Ballots will be deposited at Bob’s Big M. The winners of the contest will be announced Dec. 23. The winner will have their name engraved on a plaque, which is kept in their store until a new winner is named the following year.
Last year’s winner was optometrist Dr. Elliot Immerman. His tree was decorated with eyeglasses. Sheri Sheldon, a chamber of commerce member, said a lot of people come up with unique decorating idea to represent their businesses.
Sheldon said the merchant tree decorating contest is a way to draw people to Wolcott for holiday shopping. “The Chamber of Commerce is encouraging people to shop downtown by looking at and judging the trees.”
Customers who vote on a tree are also automatically entered to win a turkey.
Last year, 27 merchants decorated trees for the contest. Sheldon said this year it has been harder to get merchants to register. “Maybe with the snow it will get them more interested.”
