Memorial Day Commemorated in North Rose

Ryan Stewart of North Rose, a member of the New York National Guard, shares a word with his daughter. Courtney, a fourth grader at North Rose Elementary School, on May 22. The school holds its annual Memorial Day celebration that day, starting with a coffee hour for veterans and active servicemen and women. A parade follows; this year’s was indoors because of chilly temperatures and threat of rain. Courtney dressed in camouflage to honor her father, an A1C who has been in the guard for a year and a half and is learning to fly unmanned aircraft.

Telling Typo: Political Pundits Call Wayne “Walsh County”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Typo, or Freudian slip?
The Washington-based CQ Today earlier this month referred to Wayne County as “Walsh County” in an article about Dale Sweetland getting the support of the Republican committees here and in Cayuga, Onondaga and Monroe counties.
Incumbent Republican Congressman James Walsh, who isn’t running again, played strong in Wayne County in 2006, which won him the race in spite of narrowly losing in Onondaga and Monroe.
The article, which ran May 8, reads as follows: “Several candidates were again vying for the sear in the aftermath of (Peter) Cappuccilli’s withdrawal and the leaders of the four Republican committees – Onondaga, Walsh, Cayuga and Monroe counties – negotiated to find a candidate.”
According to its mission statement, “Congressional Quarterly Inc. has been the nation’s leader in political journalism since 1945. Over that time the company has built a peerless reputation for objective, non-partisan and authoritative reporting on Congress and politics, and today stands on the leading edge of information companies publishing in both print and online platforms.”
CQ, which has more than 150 reporters covering Capitol Hill, also had something interesting to say about the race, now between Sweetland and Democrat Dan Maffei, who almost beat Walsh the last time around.
In spite of Maffei’s jump on fundraising and name recognition; CQ said there is “no clear favorite” in the race and placed it in its most competitive category.

SAVANNAH – When more than a dozen federal agents, state police and Wayne County sheriff’s deputies entered a home on Route 31 May 21 shortly after 6 a.m., a woman who lives there said they handcuffed her and 16 others and yelled that they were “mojados.”
