Patterson Confirmed What We Knew
Wednesday, June 11 2008
The June 4 article in the Wayne County Star “Patterson: Wayne is Highest Taxed County in Nation” confirms what Wayne County property owners have for years suspected. Can you believe it? Wayne County property owners have a higher tax rate than Beverly Hills, Lake Tahoe, Palm Springs and, in fact, every other place in the country. Think about it, if you could move your Wayne County home or property anywhere else in the nation your tax rate would be lower. I think this is only the tip of the iceberg, How bad is it when the liberal Democratic governor of the most renowned tax and spend state feels the need to pass laws stopping local communities and school districts from excessively taxing their residents? One does not have to look very far to see the eroding effects of our high tax rates. People are moving, very few new homes are being built, we can’t attract doctors and other needed professionals, new businesses don’t consider Wayne County as a possible location and existing local businesses can’t be competitive so they move or close. The governor’s study outlined many of the reasons that nine out of 10 of the highest taxed counties were in upstate New York. But don’t forget, Wayne County is the highest in the nation. Here is my question/challenge to the Wayne County Board of Supervisors and every school board in Wayne County. Given the fact that counties all across the nation deal with similar tax increasing problems such as state and federal mandates, Medicaid, special education, employee benefits and pensions, infrastructure updates, high fuel prices, etc.; what ‘unique’ problem does Wayne County have that causes it to have the highest tax rate in the nation? And, of course, are you doing anything about it? I’m serious, most of you have your newspaper columns where you communicate with the local residents and everyone of you have the ability to write a letter to the editor of your local paper. Please take e few minutes to tell us what you are doing to control costs, manage your respective operations more efficiently and your ideas to spend tax dollars more wisely. I think we are all tired of being number one!
