FAIR HAVEN - Raymond S. Sant, 72, of Eldredge Point, Fair Haven, died June 10, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. Mr. Sant was born in Auburn, the son of the late Raymond T. and Mabelle Spafford Sant and has resided in the Cato-Fair Haven area all of his life. He was a graduate of Cato-Meridan High School, Class of 1954. He received his B. A. degree from Cornell University in 1958 and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Following graduation at Cornell he received a commission to the U. S. Army and served in the reserves until he was honorably discharged, as a captain, in 1969. In 1962, he received his juris doctor degree from Syracuse University College of Law. Mr. Sant began his legal career at the law firm of Michaels, Port, and Cuddy in 1962. During this same period he joined Judge Peter Corning in the practice of law in Auburn. It was also during this period that Mr. Sant opened his law office in Cato, which he has maintained for the past 45 years. Mr. Sant has had a long and prestigious career in the legal profession. He was admitted to practice before the New York State Appellate Division Fourth Department in June 1963. He served as assistant Cayuga County attorney from 1964 through 1968. In 1968 he was appointed Cayuga County attorney, retiring in 1991. He served as an assistant Cayuga County district attorney for several years, the Cato Meridian School attorney, the Town of Cato attorney and has served as the Cayuga County Industrial Development Attorney since its inception. He was past president of the Cayuga County Bar Association. In 1991 Mr. Sant was granted the honor of practicing law before the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Sant was a lifelong Republican and served as chairman of the Cayuga County Republican Committee from 1974 through 1979. He was delegate to the 1976 Republican Convention. Mr. Sant was deeply committed to his community and was very proud of being a fourth generation “Catonian.” He was awarded the Distinguished Native Son award from the Sterling Historical Society and he was appointed by Sheriff Wilcox as the first Water Deputy for Cayuga County. In addition he was a member of the Cato Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Sant is survived by: Alice M. House, his loving companion of many years; her children: Cheryl M. House of Fair Haven, David C. House of Raleigh, N.C., Stefan M. House of Boston, Mass., Hugh E. House of Port Byron, Jana E. House of Fair Haven and Lesley A. House of Fair Haven; four nephews Paul Brockman and his wife Beth of Mohnton, Pa., Ted Brockman and his wife Georgette of Flemington, N.J., Peter Brockman and his wife Robin of Endenheim, Pa. and Mark Brockman and his wife Gail of Temple, Pa. Mr. Sant is predeceased by a sister, Jane Sant Brockman. Funeral services were held June 15 in the Cato Christian Fellowship Church, E. Main Street, Cato, with the Rev. Ronald Dusharm officiating. The services were followed by interment in Springbrook Cemetery, Fair Haven, with full military honors. Friends were invited to call on the family June 14 at the Jewell Funeral Home, Inc., South Street, Cato, New York.
