Last month, the Newark village board decided to throw the Wayne County
Probation Department out of a room in the Newark Municipal Building.
Angry that the county would not agree to free extra sheriff’s coverage
for the Newark Family Fest this year, the village is now forcing Newark
and Arcadia probationers to go to Lyons to meet with their probation
officers.
Newark asked for a total of 80 hours of coverage among multiple
officers for the festival; the county said no so the village evicted
the probation office.

Double Standards Continue at SWCD

To the Editor:
Good government requires consistent leadership, not double standards.
Last year a well-respected public employee was railroaded and publicly
persecuted for hiring contractors (on bid) at a slightly higher hourly
rate. The need was clear, the work was there and the bidders were all
eligible. Yet this year the board of directors of the Wayne County Soil
& Water Conservation District, have authorized the hiring of higher
bidders costing the taxpayers of Wayne County more than necessary.
