I guess New York State isn’t in such a financial crisis after all, that all of Gov. David Paterson’s tales of doom and gloom in the late winter, about how the state had this terrible budget deficit, really was just a mistake.
Why else then, did the state tap into its federal stimulus funds, to the tune of $140 million  to give families on welfare or food stamps $200 per child for a back-to-school shopping spree?

The first thing I did on my 18th birthday was register to vote. I took the day off from school and proudly registered as a Republican. My inspiration was Ronald Reagan and the values both he and the party stood for.

Healthcare Meeting Not Reflective of Community

To the Editor:
Thank you for your article on the Maffei town meetings in Newark last Friday.
I attended the first meeting.  Reflecting on the experience, my comments are:
Those attending the meeting were clearly not representative of the entire community.  In my judgment, participation was heavily weighted towards people like me, that is, who are seniors, are retired and are covered by employer - provided health care insurance.  I think of us as the “comfortable people” who are satisfied with the way things are and therefore unenthusiastic (to put it mildly) about change.
