Montezumer Audubon Center Announces Teacher Workship

Wednesday, August 26 2009

The Montezuma Audubon Center and Seneca Meadows Environmental Education Center invite teachers to Teacher Workshops on Sept. 3 from 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Workshops will introduce the Centers’ new school field trip opportunities. Both workshops will be led by Audubon staff.
The Seneca Meadows Environmental Education Center offers environmental education programs for high school students. The workshop at SMEEC in Seneca Falls will allow teachers to spend a day participating in these hands-on programs. In a Spineless Bunch program teachers will collect, organize, identify and record aquatic macroinvertebrates from Black Brook. The Alien Invaders program focuses on what non-native invasive species are of concern within the Seneca Meadows Mitigation Area and will give participants the opportunity to inventory these plants using GPS units. Teachers will gain an understanding of biomimicry and how it reduces human impacts on the environment through high performance buildings in the Building with Nature program.
The Montezuma Audubon Center in Savannah offers field trip and outreach programs for children of all ages. This workshop will give the teachers the opportunity to learn about the history of the Center and its surrounding habitats. Participants will also experience a sampling of programs offered by the MAC. Specifically they will explore pond ecology using nets to collect frogs and insects in  the Wetlands Ecology program. This program provides students with a hands-on opportunity to learn about life cycles and food chains. Teachers will also learn about the For the Birds! Program, an eight week place-based outreach program that teaches environmental awareness and appreciation of nature through the study of local birds and habitats. During the workshop they will learn how to identify birds through sight and sound and participate in a citizen science project while they count the birds from the Center’s trails.
Both workshops will conclude at the Montezuma Audubon Center with a barbecue lunch and afternoon guided hike.
Pre-registration is required by Sept. 1.
