SODUS - Sodus Chamber of Commerce has many plans for the upcoming fall. The Sept. 3 meeting on Health Care presented by BeneCare is certainly timely. The program starts at 7 p.m. at the Sodus Reliant Credit Union (north entrance). The public is welcome to attend this free event but needs to reserve a seat by calling the chamber at 576-3818 by Sept. 1.
Plans are being finalized for the second Harvest Fest which is scheduled for Oct. 3 and will be held at Sodus Central track field. The event kicks off with a “Hats and Jammies” parade down Main Street. Kids are encouraged to make a silly hat or just wear their pj’s. The local fire departments will be there with their trucks and local officials will be on display inside apple bins! Antique tractors and a special appearance by a past president are also being planned. Walk or watch the fun.
The judging of the largest pumpkin, watermelon and sunflower will be done in the center activities tent. The Harvest Dessert Baking Contest is open to adults and kids (17 and under) with prizes being donated by Reliant Credit Union. Desserts will be auctioned off after the judging and proceeds going to the Harvest Fest fund. Over 15 vendors have signed on with everything from apple crisp to Sodus Center Fried Waffles to zucchini at the Farmer’s Market, not to mention the clams, hots, and hamburgs. There will be lots of jewelry, scented soaps, arts and crafts and this makes it a perfect time to start Christmas shopping. .
Other events for the Harvest Fest include “pumpkin chuckin” thanks to Rob Wahl and his students who built, not one, but three catapults. There will also be a 75 foot crane to drop pumpkins from, watermelon seed spitting contests, bike races, and bean bag toss for the little ones. Tours of the renovated high school auditorium and art display at the school are also planned. The lucky winner of the go cart donated by NAPA Sodus Auto Parts will be drawn. The Chamber will again host a “Meet and Greet the Candidates” on Oct. 18 at the Wallington Fire Hall. The annual Halloween Party co-sponsored with Blossom View Nursing and Rehab is scheduled for Oct. 31 and Santa arrives in the Sodus Village Park on Nov. 27.
